HULL CITY 1 - 3 LIVERPOOL
Saturday 25 April 2009 15:00 , Barclays Premier League
KUYT BRACE KEEPS PRESSURE ON UNITED

A Dirk Kuyt double helped earn Liverpool a 3-1 victory over 10-man Hull City on Saturday afternoon.

The Dutchman fired twice in the second half after a beautiful opener from Xabi Alonso to put the Reds ahead of Manchester United on goal difference before their tea-time kick-off against Tottenham.

The hosts put up a mighty fight during Liverpool's first ever trip to the KC Stadium, scoring through Geovanni after Caleb Folan's 58th minute dismissal.

Rafa Benitez made three changes from the side that produced one of the Premier League's greatest ever games on Tuesday, with Emiliano Insua, Lucas Leiva and Martin Skrtel all returning.

They took part in an opening half which felt very much like the morning after the night before, as Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm.

Hull's hustling created several uncomfortable moments for the visiting defence early on, notably when Dean Marney surged forward from midfield on a quarter of an hour. Liverpool's rearguard backed off, allowing Marney to thunder a shot just off target.

Minutes later Geovanni came even closer as he showed all his Brazilian technique to launch a wicked volley towards goal from 30 yards. With Pepe Reina beaten, Liverpool were relieved to see the ball fly narrowly wide.

Phil Brown's men almost got the opener on 38 minutes when Sam Ricketts crossed towards the back post, where Nicky Barmy waited to inflict title misery on his former club. The plan went awry only when Folan interjected with a stretched header, much to the frustration of his better-placed teammate.

For Liverpool, only Yossi Benayoun looked at his best. The Israeli twisted his way towards goal on seven minutes before having a shot blocked. The ball fell to Fernando Torres eight yards out but the Spaniard was denied by a diving save from Boaz Myhill.

For his next trick, Benayoun turned Ricketts on a sixpence before curling over from an acute angle.

This was just about it from the visitors until Alonso opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time. The Spaniard's initial free-kick had been blocked by the Hull wall, but as the ball bounced back in his direction, Alonso shaped to hit an unstoppable right-foot volley beyond Myhill into the bottom corner.

The second half was only marginally better from a footballing perspective. It was 10 minutes before either side created a chance of note when Alvaro Arbeloa and Kuyt combined down the right before picking out Torres in the box. The 24-year-old struggled to find his shooting boots all afternoon and this time lashed just over the bar.

Liverpool's task was about to be made a whole lot easier on 58 minutes when referee Martin Atkinson issued a straight red card to Caleb Folan after an arm to the face of Martin Skrtel.

Five minutes later Kuyt made it 2-0 with a goal straight out of the poacher's handbook. It came after a Liverpool corner was cleared to Skrtel, whose fumbled shot fell to the Dutchman, who in turn sliced home from close range.

That should have been that, but Hull were given hope and impetus on 73 minutes when a long ball from Bernard Mendy opened the Liverpool defence. Substitute Daniel Cousin did his part down the left before sending a low cross to the unmarked Geovanni, who converted into an empty net.

The Merseysiders almost hit an instant reply when Torres put a goal on a plate for Lucas, who should have shot with his left but instead sent an ambitious right-foot dink high and wide.

Next, the sight of a Torres header rebounding off the crossbar after a well-aimed cross from Kuyt.

The Dutchman showed his fellow striker how it was done on 89 minutes when Myhill parried an Arbeloa shot and Kuyt was on hand to sidefoot into a vacant goal.

LIVERPOOL 3 - 0 NEWCASTLE UNITED
Sunday 03 May 2009 13:30 , Barclays Premier League
REDS WIN AGAIN TO KEEP UP PRESSURE

Liverpool closed the gap on Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premier League to three points courtesy of a 3-0 victory over ten-man Newcastle United at Anfield.

First-half goals from Yossi Benayoun and Dirk Kuyt put the Reds into the driving seat against the Magpies, who were reduced to ten men deep into the second-half when Joey Barton was shown a straight red card for a wild lunge on Xabi Alonso.

Lucas sealed the three points when he nodded Fabio Aurelio's free-kick home with three minutes remaining.

The result moves the Reds to within three points of table toppers United with just three matches left to play for Benitez's men.

Steven Gerrard returned to the Liverpool starting line-up after four matches out with a groin injury, but the Reds were without striker Fernando Torres. The Spain star was not even named amongst the substitutes, but watched on from the Anfield directors' box.

However, Daniel Agger celebrated agreeing a four-year extension to his contract by replacing Martin Skrtel in the centre of defence while Fabio Aurelio and Albert Riera were also restored to the side as Rafa Benitez's charges looked to maintain an unbeaten home league record that stretched back till December 2007.

The Reds had inflicted a crushing defeat to the Magpies earlier in the campaign, running out emphatic 5-1 winners at St James' Park in December.

However, in the build-up to this one, Benitez warned he was anticipating a much tighter encounter against a Toon side battling against the threat of relegation.

From the first whistle, Gerrard was heavily involved. With only a minute on the clock the skipper had burst into the area, beyond Habib Beye, but went down under the challenge of the Newcastle defender.

The referee waved away the appeals of the crowd and the visitors took their turn to threaten as Obafemi Martins' shot deflected off Carragher and out for a corner.

On 13 minutes, Gerrard brought the first save of the afternoon. His low free-kick from 20-yards was gathered by Steve Harper after Fabricio Coloccini had felled the Reds midfielder.

Three minutes later, our exquisite number eight was at it again. This time his drive from just outside the corner of the box was turned around the post by Harper at full-stretch.

Liverpool came even closer in the 17th minute as they began to assume control of the game following a spirited opening from Newcastle.

Kuyt's deep cross from the right evaded everyone gathered inside the box, but was collected by Aurelio on the left. The Brazilian's instant return was headed wide by Kuyt at the far post.

Seconds later, Newcastle broke forward and Joey Barton beat Riera to the ball to feed Peter Lovenkrands into the area. The winger managed to round Pepe Reina, but his shot from an actue angle lacked conviction and Alvaro Arbeloa was able to stop the ball on the line.

Newcastle were left to rue their missed opportunity as Liverpool broke the deadlock on 22 minutes.

The Magpies only half-cleared Riera's cross, allowing Alonso to spread it wide to Gerrard on the right. His low centre should have been dealt with by Alan Smith, but he failed to control allowing Kuyt to collect possession inside the area.

The Dutchman's drilled ball across goal was turned over the line via the knee of the unmarked Yossi Benayoun from two yards for Liverpool's 300th goal in the Barclays Premier League under the guidance Benitez.

It got even better for the Reds six minutes later as Kuyt doubled their lead. The number 18 was left unmarked inside the box and he took full advantage, beating Harper with a powerful diving header from Gerrard's precise corner. The strike equalled Kuyt's best ever tally for a season in a red shirt.

Having made a promising start to the afternoon, Newcastle were visibly shell shocked by Liverpool's quick-fire double and when Riera forced another corner on the half-hour mark, they feared the worst.

Gerrard's ball was met by Agger at the back post, but the Dane's cutback eluded his teammates. Alonso collected possession and lofted a trademark cross-field pass out to Arbeloa on the right, who in turn found Kuyt. His ball across goal was deliberate in trying to pick out Benayoun at the back post this time, however it evaded the Israeli utility man by a matter of inches.

The home side were now playing with the swagger of a team high on confidence and only the boot of Coloccini prevented Kuyt from making it three after Riera had skinned Martins on the left.

There was a time when the Argentina defender's name was mentioned with the likes of Liverpool in the back pages of the press and he, like Harper, was simply a spectator as Alonso crashed a curling strike off the crossbar on 38 minutes.

Alan Shearer's men were at sixes and sevens and they needed makeshift full-back Damien Duff to produce a fine block to thwart Gerrard's goalbound effort after the Anfield captain had surged into the area.

The ball broke for Kuyt, whose spectacular overhead kick was again blocked by Sebastian Bassong, before Riera eventually shot wide of the post.

Harper was then tested by Agger's swerving 20-yarder and the Toon custodian had to produce a flying stop to repel the effort and ensure the away team did not fall further behind before the break.

The interval showed no sign of derailing Liverpool's tempo and Gerrard was inches away from punishing Bassong's wayward clearance, but the midfielder's drilled volley across goal flew the wrong side of the post moments after the restart.

On 59 minutes, the captain went even closer to adding to his 21 goal tally with a rasping drive that narrowly cleared the bar before Riera struck wide from an angle.

It was the last action of the afternoon for the Spain winger as Benitez introduced Ryan Babel to try and stretch a tiring Newcastle defence with his pace.

Liverpool continued to threaten as Kuyt diverted Arbeloa's header goalwards, only for Harper to pluck it out of the air, prior to Mascherano shooting wide from the edge of the box.

Then, with twenty minutes remaining on the Anfield scoreboard, the Newcastle custodian proved equal to Gerrard's curling shot from Babel's cut-back.

A third seemed inevitable, particularly as Alonso rattled Harper's crossbar once again with a similar shot to the one that had found the woodwork in the first-half, before Gerrard clipped an effort wide from the edge of the box with Anfield expecting to see the net bulge.

Newcastle's cause was further disrupted by the dismissal of Joey Barton with thirteen minutes remaining after a rash, and totally unnecessary, two footed lunge on Alonso by the corner flag.

The Liverpool-born midfielder was shown a straight red by referee Phil Dowd and Alonso was unable to continue, with Lucas replacing the midfielder.

Ironic chants of 'Shearer, Shearer' rang out from the Kop before Lucas finally claimed a deserved third for the Reds as the Brazilian nodded Aurelio's free-kick beyond Harper from close-range with three minutes left to play and there was still time for Gerrard to thunder a shot against the bar in stoppage-time.

REDS RELEGATE BAGGIES WITH 2-0 WIN

Goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt ensured Liverpool will end 2008-09 with their highest ever Premier League points tally.

The 2-0 victory means the Reds have now amassed 83 this term, one more than in 2005-06. Strikes either side of the break also ended any lingering hopes of survival for a plucky West Brom side.

While there is no consolation for missing out on the title following United's draw against Arsenal, Rafa Benitez will take heart from the fact his team took the race to the penultimate weekend, a feat not achieved by any of his three predecessors.

It was a West Brom side fighting for their Premier League lives who created all the early chances here, notably when Jonathan Greening forced a superb low save from Pepe Reina after a far-post corner.

The Baggies skipper continued to lead by example, nutmegging Javier Mascherano before firing a wicked ball across the area which Reina somehow managed to divert.

It was already turning out to be one of the busiest of Reina's 50 appearances this term as his teammates struggled to find their rhythm against a team desperate not to be playing Championship football in 2009-10.

Next, Kuyt had to display all of his defensive qualities to head clear a Chris Brunt cross as Juan Carlos Menseguez lurked.

Liverpool had yet to muster a serious opportunity when they opened the scoring on 28 minutes. It came when Gerrard pounced on sloppy possession from Shelton Martis, strode into the box and sliced beyond Dean Kiely.

A distraught Martis was consoled by his teammates as the newly-crowed Footballer of the Year pondered his 24th strike of a memorable campaign, one more than his previous best tally.

Tony Mowbray's men almost conjured an instant reply when Carragher slipped to let Marc-Antoine Fortune through on goal before Daniel Agger intervened with a fine interception.

But it was Liverpool for whom half-time came too soon as they began to demonstrate some of their relentless end-of-season form.

First, Kiely added to a weekend of fine saves, tipping a flicked header from Torres onto the roof of the net. The goalkeeper's good work was almost immediately undone when he spilled a 25-yard drive from Agger, with Yossi Benayoun's bid to capitalise thwarted by an offside flag.

The half ended in controversy as Gerrard squared up to Jonas Olsson after being denied a penalty following a barge to the ground.

West Brom regained some impetus as the sides came out for the second half, with Menseguez testing Reina with a low drive after a mistake from Lucas.

Even worse for the visitors was the sight of Mascherano limping to the touchline on 51 minutes with a knock sustained late in the first period.

His replacement, Xabi Alonso, nearly had an instant impact with a lovely ball to Torres, who found a yard before blasting wide with his right foot.

The Spain international was again sent clear by Gerrard minutes later but the angle made Kiely's low save routine.

With time running out on his club's top flight tenure, Mowbray sacrificed centre-back Martis for midfielder Borja Valero.

The Baggies' record signing wasted no time making his presence felt with a slick pass which defied Liverpool's offside trap. Menseguez was through on Reina but instead squared to Fortune, who was beaten to it by a clumsy if effective challenge by Lucas. A collective scream echoed round The Hawthorns but referee Martin Atkinson waved away their penalty protests.

Moments later indignation turned to heartache as Liverpool scored the goal which effectively sealed their fate. It came on 63 minutes as Kuyt and Gerrard combined before the Dutchman lashed an unstoppable effort beyond the reach of Kiely from the edge of the box.

Kuyt, too, had now trumped his best ever goals tally in England with an impressive haul of 15 from the right wing.

Lucas should have got his name on the scoresheet after doing all the hard work to turn Olsson before poking wide from eight yards.

West Brom refused to go down without a fight, with Fortune denied first by a last-gasp challenge from Jamie Carragher, then by the crossbar. Substitute Luke Moore also struck the post with a neat turn and shot from the edge of the box.

Their side was trying everything, though it was becoming harder for the capacity crowd to believe with every passing minute.

Liverpool's own desire to claim three points was illustrated by a fiery exchange between Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa after a defensive lapse allowed Fortune sight of goal.

Any faint hopes of a miracle comeback for the hosts were almost put to bed with five minutes remaining when a superb dummy from Alonso left substitute Ryan Babel with just Kiely to beat. The Dutchman somehow contrived to curl wide.

The miss proved academic as Liverpool held on to record their 13th away win of the season, equalling a club record set 104 years ago.

Teams
Liverpool: Reina, Insua, Carragher, Agger, Arbeloa, Benayoun, Mascherano, Leiva, Kuyt, Gerrard (captain), Torres. Subs - Alonso, Riera, Ngog, Dossena, Cavalieri, Skrtel, Babel

West Brom: Kiely, Donk, Martis, Olsson, Zuiverloon, Koren, Greening (captain), Mulumbu, Brunt, Menseguez, Fortune. Subs - Carson, Moore, Borja Valero, Simpson, Wood, Meite, Filipe Teixeira

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2 - 1 LIVERPOOL
Sunday 16 August 2009 16:00 , Barclays Premier League
REDS SLUMP TO OPENING DAY DEFEAT

Goals from Beniot Assou-Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong condemned Liverpool to a disappointing opening day defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Full-back Assou-Ekotto fired Spurs into the lead just before half-time with a powerful drive into the top corner after the home team had threatened throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Steven Gerrard gave the Reds hope with a 56th minute penalty, but Bassong restored Tottenham's lead with a towering header to inflict defeat on Rafael Benitez's charges in the first game of the new season.

Liverpool were boosted pre-match by the inclusion of Gerrard, Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher in their starting XI after the trio were deemed fit following recent injury concerns.

The Reds' first opening arrived in the fifth minute when Skrtel's long-ball forward almost allowed Ryan Babel a clear run on goal, but Spurs' summer signing Bassong was able to recover and deny the Dutchman a shooting opportunity.

On 15 minutes, centre-back duo Carragher and Skrtel were involved in a heavy but accidental collision as they both went to head a ball into the box clear.

The Anfield vice-captain required stitches to a head wound, while Skrtel received treatment on the side of the pitch before the pair both returned to the field - Carra in a Terry Butcher-esque head bandage.

Aaron Lennon skewed well wide from 12 yards with Tottenham's first chance of note on 21 minutes as the home side began to apply heavy pressure to the Liverpool rearguard.

Gerrard flashed a low shot narrowly wide of Heurelho Gomes' post just shy of the half-hour mark, but Pepe Reina was forced to produce a world-class save shortly after to deny ex-Red Robbie Keane after Luka Modric had picked out the unmarked Irishman in the centre.

The striker seemed destined to score from point blank range, but Liverpool's custodian thwarted his former teammate with a fantastic block.

The Spain international again frustrated the 29-year-old moments later as he clawed away a goalbound effort with his left hand, prior to Jermaine Defoe heading wide.

Keane spurned another good chance three minutes before the break when he blazed high and wide from a central position just inside the area.

However, Spurs finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time when full-back Assou-Ekotto arrowed a powerful strike into the top corner of Reina's goal from 20 yards after Tom Huddlestone's initial free-kick had cannoned back off the Liverpool wall.

The visitors emerged with renewed determination after the break and Gerrard was inches away from drawing level with another powerful daisy cutter from distance after good play from Dirk Kuyt and Fernando Torres, although Reina had to be at full stretch to tip a long-range Wilson Palacios drive over the crossbar in the immediately after.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty on 54 minutes after a trademark surge forward from Johnson. The full-back turned one way then the other before busting into the box. Gomes rushed from his line, but only succeeded in bringing down Anfield's new No.2.

Gerrard stepped up to take the resulting penalty and the skipper made no mistake, clinically dispatching the spot-kick into the back of the net with aplomb.

The Reds' joy was short lived, however, as Bassong rose highest to plant Luka Modric's precise free-kick beyond Reina via his head in the 59th minute after Carragher had fouled Defoe 25 yards from goal.
Liverpool's response saw Gerrard's curling free-kick palmed over the bar by Gomes before the goalkeeper stopped a left-footed strike from the captain.

With just over 15 minutes remaining, young defender Daniel Ayala was introduced to the action for his Reds debut, replacing Skrtel who was still visibly shaken from the first-half collision with Carragher.

The visitors continued to probe and had a strong penalty appeal waved away with five minutes remaining as substitute Andriy Voronin was seemingly barged off the ball by Assou-Ekotto when through on goal.

Minutes later, the full-back was at the centre of another spot-kick claim as Torres' centre appeared to be blocked by the hand of the Tottenham defender.

Sammy Lee was sent from the Liverpool bench by referee Phil Dowd as tensions rose and time ebbed away, and the Reds were unable to find an equaliser on what will go down as a day to forget at White Hart Lane.

Teams
Liverpool: Reina, Insua, Carragher, Skrtel, Johnson, Babel, Mascherano, Leiva, Kuyt, Gerrard (captain), Torres. Subs - Spearing, Kelly, Sanchez Ayala, Dossena, Cavalieri, Voronin, Benayoun

Tottenham Hotspur: Gomes, Assou-Ekotto, King, Bassong, Corluka, Modric, Huddlestone, Palacios, Lennon, Defoe, Keane (captain). Subs - O'Hara, Pavlyuchenko, Bentley, Cudicini, Naughton, Crouch, Hutton
